On the eve of another home Test series played in a first-class cricket vacuum, Australia’s team performance manager Pat Howard has admitted it will take years for international sides to find a way of coping adequately with the mounting tension between Twenty20 and long-form games. As has become standard procedure for the Australian season, the Tests at the height of summer run concurrently against the BBL, leaving the national team and its selectors with no reliable first-class competition beneath it to groove players for five-day combat. Unless contracted to a BBL team, cricketers around the country have no option but to go back to their clubs for any kind of match play, leaving batsmen and bowlers without an adequate lead-in to possible Test match duty.Mitchell Johnson, Australia’s 12th man against Sri Lanka in Hobart, has packed his kit and prepared to fly out of Tasmania, and will now have only a series of four-over cameos for the Brisbane Heat by which to press his case for a return to the XI. Usman Khawaja and Alex Doolan, meanwhile, appear little chance of pressing Phillip Hughes for his newly regained Test batting spot via their T20 duties for the Sydney Thunder and the Melbourne Renegades. This muddled state of affairs will return again during next summer’s Ashes Tests in Australia.Howard told ESPNcricinfo that the competing technical, physical and mental demands of T20 and Test matches were causing furrowed brows around the world, leaving players, coaches and support staff from all nations at something of a loss to find the ideal preparatory path. Australia has made considerable strides in developing the lines of communication between CA, the states and the BBL teams to ensure players of interest are given some chance of staying Test-ready, but Howard conceded much still needed to be learned.”It’s not a perfect world, you want to be able to deal with all the different formats, and it’s complicated. But it’s complicated for everybody,” Howard said. “I actually think dealing with this challenge will take a couple of years for all countries, and they’re dealing with it in different ways.”The scheduling is difficult. In saying this, you get plenty of warning – it’s not like they put that schedule up against you a week in advance. So we know this same round of BBL is between Test one and Test two of the Ashes next year, we’re well across that. So we’re 12 months in advance in our schedule and our thinking, so we need to be making sure those guys in and around the team are getting practice with the right coloured balls at the right time, with the right coaches.”And they know they’re playing in game X, but part of their training is going to incorporate Y. That’s been communicated through the national selection panel with the states as well and through the BBL teams. That process has been happening. It’s never easy, but it’s part of the challenge that all teams and all countries now have to go through.”Australia’s captain Michael Clarke experienced the difficulty of being left to his own devices for almost a month in October during the Champions League T20, which left New South Wales without any Sheffield Shield matches due to the Sydney Sixers’ qualification for the international club tournament. He said Howard and the national selectors were doing a fair job of informing players of where they stood and how much they needed to prepare.”It’s so hard to have the cake and eat it. The Australian Test team’s playing 12 months a year, there’s no real perfect time to not be playing first-class cricket,” Clarke said. “I think what we’re doing really well, and Pat Howard deserves a lot of credit for this, is making sure the next group of players are still doing a lot of work against the red ball knowing we’ve got Test cricket, not only through the Australian summer but then we go to India.”Medical and fitness staff around the game have for some time pushed for the more liberal use of substitutes as a way of closing the gap between the formats. Howard said he would like to push further into that territory in domestic competitions but said he had no desire to tamper with the 11 v 11 traditions of Test matches.”I’m on the [Cricket Australia] playing conditions committee and there are very valid arguments, one for tradition, one sports science,” Howard said. “By no means would I want to test the fabric of Test cricket, that’s not what we’re here to do. There are traditions that are wonderful for the game.”But I think in terms of some of the statements [Victoria coach] Greg Shipperd has made around other versions or other formats, I am interested to have a look at it from a health and welfare position. But not Test cricket, that’s not going to change. You’d love to bring players back in to play more Shield cricket at different times without overexposing them at other times.”

Swann cautious ahead of India return

Graeme Swann will travel to India on the verge of becoming England’s most successful offspinner in Test cricket but he has cautioned against expectations that his bowling will be the decisive factor in the tourists’ attempts to win the series.Since taking two wickets in his first over of Test cricket in Chennai four years ago, Swann has added a further 190 to the tally to leave him within one wicket of Jim Laker’s mark of 193. Although Swann has taken 39 wickets in 2012, his ten victims during the English summer came at an average of 59 and he was dropped for the first time in more than three years when England opted, unsuccessfully, to play four fast bowlers against South Africa at Headingley.A chronic elbow injury, which has required periods of rest to ameliorate the pain of floating bone fragments near to the nerve, has also dogged Swann. He acknowledges that the expectations of Indian pitches will add to his burden, as England seek to improve on a record that has seen them win just one Test match in the country since 1985, but can take confidence from an impressive record in Asia, which includes taking his second ten-wicket haul in Tests against Sri Lanka earlier this year.”As a spinner it stands to reason that when you go to the subcontinent people are going to look to you and how you bowl,” Swann told the before heading off for England’s training camp in Dubai. “But if we do turn up just expecting the spinner to win the series for us then we’re screwed.”The key to Test cricket is that the more you play the more confident you get and the more confident you get ergo you bowl more consistently. Having looked at the schedule I know two of the pitches might turn, in Kolkata and Mumbai. I am not sure about the other two. I have been reliably informed that Nagpur is the flattest wicket ever devised by groundsmen but that was by Cooky, who got a hundred there on his debut.”Alastair Cook, now elevated to the position of England captain, shares with Swann the experience of an impressive debut in India. But Swann was also swift to recall the result of the first Test in 2008, when Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten hundred helped India to reach a fourth-innings target of 387 with six wickets in hand.”It all started for me there and I can’t quite believe it has come round again so quickly,” Swann said. “It all seems like a dream when I think about the start of it. I remember the smells that were wafting over the ground when I took the ball. It’s all very romantic when I think back.”The rose-tinted glasses are removed of course because of the fact that we had 360-odd chased down at a canter by Mr Tendulkar. But it’s got fond memories for me personally because I did well. To realise that you can compete at a level that you have always had a sneaking suspicion that you weren’t good enough for is one of the greatest weights ever to be lifted off your shoulders. I will be indebted to those first two Test matches for making me realise it was just another game of cricket.”Swann will return to India have long since usurped Monty Panesar as England’s No. 1 spinner and, despite the protestations to the contrary, his form with the ball will almost certainly be as important to the team as the return of Kevin Pietersen to the fold. The summer rupture between members of the England squad and Pietersen was compounded by a painful series defeat to South Africa, and the loss of the No. 1 ranking, but Cook in his new role has been instrumental in seeking a fresh start. It was during Pietersen’s brief spell as England captain that Swann came into the side and he was among the players Pietersen met with during his “reintegration” process. Swann expressed relief that the situation had been resolved and, after becoming a father for the second time only a week ago, he was perhaps understandably looking forward to focusing on more important issues.”More than anything it is a good thing it is done and dusted,” said Swann. “A line has been drawn under it and the actual cricket can go back to doing the talking rather than off-field antics. I am sure it can get back to how it was. I think a lot depended on Kevin. He seems in a place now where he is happy to play again, he has committed himself to the team and that’s good moving forward.”I think that everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet now. I think there has been a bit of honesty and a bit of contriteness from certain parties. I think everybody is fed up with it and that’s why we just want to play cricket.”After almost a month off post-World Twenty20, England will begin playing cricket again on Tuesday, with a three-day game against India A. That will be followed by two more warm-up matches, before the first of four Tests begins in Ahmedabad on November 15.

Gayle 'takes all the pressure off' – Powell

The opener Kieran Powell has said he needed to divorce himself from Chris Gayle’s brisk scoring to ensure he did not throw his own wicket away on the second day in Antigua. West Indies will now set their sights on batting into day four after making such a strong start to the first innings against New Zealand, with the total having reached 145 for 0 at stumps on the second day.It was already the highest opening stand in a Test by a West Indies pair since Gayle and Daren Ganga added 162 in Multan in November 2006. The performance highlighted the importance to the West Indies side of Gayle, who was playing his first Test in more than 18 months, and he moved along to 85 from 124 deliveries while Powell shuffled along at his own pace to 58 from 164.”It’s a big relief because it takes all the pressure off your scoring,” Powell said of having Gayle at the top of the order. “The shots you see him play, you just have to put yourself in your own bubble and get away from that or you try and do things and get out. It wasn’t difficult, I just got myself in my own little bubble and just tried to steady. It didn’t matter what I saw at the other end from Chris. I just tried to stick within my limitations.”The West Indies openers had already undone much of the good work New Zealand had put together over the first day, although he deficit remained 206 runs at stumps. But with the world’s No. 4-ranked batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, still to come, along with men like Marlon Samuels and Narsingh Deonarine, finding a way through to the West Indies tail looms as a tough challenge for New Zealand.”It’s always important to get a good start when you’ve got guys like that in your team,” Powell said of Chanderpaul and the middle order. “They know they can come in and play under no pressure and express themselves a bit earlier in their innings as well. We’ve got a good start early, so if we can bat the whole of tomorrow and a piece of day four we should be in a good position to bat once and have New Zealand out twice.”The New Zealanders felt they were on top after the first day, when they closed at 232 for 4, but Sunil Narine’s first five-wicket haul in a Test match meant they were dismissed for 351 soon after lunch on the second afternoon. Daniel Vettori said that although New Zealand’s bowlers hadn’t started as they would have hoped when Gayle and Powell walked to the crease, they believed the pressure was building by the end of the day.”It wasn’t the way we wanted to start but I thought by the end of the day we were actually bowling pretty well and starting to create some pressure and maybe if the session had gone a little bit longer we could have taken some wickets,” Vettori said. “You can’t give those freebies away to Gayle because he’s like a Sehwag, he’ll just really hurt you.I think we were going at sixes and sevens pretty early on and it puts you on the back foot and you have to bowl to defensive fields and you probably don’t bowl as well as you’d like. That was pretty disappointing after what was a reasonably good batting performance.”We created some pressure at my end, I thought Kane [Williamson] bowled really well and then Neil Wagner at the end, being able to get it to reverse and starting to ask some questions. That’s going to be a handy asset for us tomorrow. I think the goal is to keep West Indies around a par score, because that wicket is going to get tougher and tougher to play on.”Wagner finished his first day of Test bowling with 0 for 35 from eight overs and although he leaked eight boundaries, Vettori said that was not a reflection on how he had bowled.”He can actually bowl reverse and he does it really well. He runs in hard and asks a lot of questions,” Vettori said. “On these sorts of wickets he’s going to be tough going and we’ve got to make sure we create that sort of pressure so we can attack.”We need to make sure they come away about par and that’s by getting early wickets tomorrow, particularly Gayle’s wicket and probably Chanderpaul’s as well, because he has the ability to bat for a long time. If we can do that, who knows, we can create some pressure and the chance to win the game.”

Gayle, Samuels end five-year break in style

Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels were batting together in an ODI for the first time in five years and their 129-run stand set up West Indies’ match-winning total

Nottingham, July 7, 2007. Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels had a 15-run partnership during a 93-run victory against England. Little did they know then that it was the last time they would bat together in an ODI for five years. Both batsmen were kept out of the West Indies side for different reasons but on July 7, 2012, Gayle and Samuels, both Jamaicans, renewed their association and marked the occasion with centuries against New Zealand at Sabina Park.Gayle made 125 off 107 balls, his 20th one-day century, which took him past Brian Lara’s West Indies record of 19. For Samuels, the unbeaten 101 was only his third hundred but it was his first in the Caribbean. Their 129-run partnership for the third wicket was the highest in West Indies total of 315 and set up a 55-run victory.”I played exactly the way I wanted to today,” Samuels, who was Man of the Match, said. “Chris set the stage with his power at the top of the innings and then I was able to come in and add the finishing touches. It was an enjoyable day for me and the team. It was special to do it with so many people who have done so much for me in my life watching.”It is my first hundred in the Caribbean, the others have been away. The others have been out of my ‘comfort zone’ … but this one has been in my ‘comfort zone’. It’s been a while since I last batted with Chris, so batting with him today was wonderful.”Gayle hit nine sixes in his innings and could have gone on to make a huge score had he not been dismissed in the 38th over. He too had praise for Samuels. “I felt he [Samuels] played really well and I’m happy for him,” Gayle said. “He is a quality player and to see him get a hundred after I got one earlier in the innings is something special.”Gayle was also pleased with the manner in which West Indies had kept New Zealand under pressure from the start of the game. “We have been playing good cricket against New Zealand from the start of the series in Florida last week and we have continued that good work here in Jamaica,” he said. “What was really pleasing to see was the way we controlled the game from the start and turned up the tempo at the right time. We were strong in all departments, and the bowlers did another good job for us today.”West Indies lead the five-match series 2-0 and the teams will travel to St Kitts for the third ODI on July 11.
