Agarkar: Bangalore bowlers need to step up

Form guide

Kolkata Knight Riders (Second): Lost to Gujarat Lions by four wickets; beat Delhi Daredevils by four wickets; beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 17 runs

Royal Challengers Bangalore (Seventh): Beat Lions by 21 runs; lost to Rising Pune Supergiant by 27 runs; lost to Mumbai Indians by four wickets

Head to headLast season: Each team won their away match – Royal Challengers thumped Knight Riders by nine wickets at Eden Gardens but lost their home match by five wickets.Overall: Knight Riders have won 10 of the 19 matches between the two sides. At Eden Gardens, Royal Challengers have won three out of seven matches. In the newsSeamer S Aravind said that AB de Villiers, Samuel Badree and Tymal Mills were likely to be fit for the match against Knight Riders. If that is the case, and Royal Challengers look at picking both overseas players, at least Travis Head and Shane Watson could make way for them.Likely XIsKolkata Knight Riders 1 Sunil Narine, 2 Gautam Gambhir (capt), 3 Robin Uthappa (wk), 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Yusuf Pathan, 6 Suryakumar Yadav, 7 Shakib Al Hasan, 8 Chris Woakes/Colin de Grandhomme, 9 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Umesh YadavRoyal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Virat Kohli (capt), 3 Travis Head/AB de Villiers, 4 Kedar Jadhav (wk), 5 Mandeep Singh/Harpreet Singh, 6 Stuart Binny, 7 Shane Watson/Samuel Badree, 8 Pawan Negi, 9 Adam Milne/Billy Stanlake/Tymal Mills, 10 S Aravind, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalStrategy punt In the match against Lions, Knight Riders opened their attack with spin – Sunil Narine and Shakib Al Hasan. If Gayle plays, that plan may be used again. Narine has one of the best economy rates against Gayle among spinners (4.39) in T20s, and has dismissed him four times – twice in the IPL. Knight Riders will also be mindful of Royal Challengers’ struggles in the Powerplay, especially against spin. In the Powerplay this season, Royal Challengers have scored the fewest runs among all teams: 239 at a run rate of 6.83. Against spin in Powerplays, they have scored at a rate of 4.33, the slowest, compared to 7.33 against pace. Some of those struggles, however, are also down to the constant shuffling in the line-up forced by injuries and form: they have had five opening pairs this season, compared to three for Knight Riders and Lions.Key stats Knight Riders will be particularly keen to get Gayle out early. At Eden Gardens, Gayle has scored 471 runs in nine innings, his second-best tally at a ground during the IPL after the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Since his switch to the Royal Challengers franchise in 2011, Gayle’s scores at Eden Gardens have been: 102*, 86, 6, 96 and 49, all batting second. Three of those knocks have resulted in wins. Knight Riders will also be looking to improve their own bowling record in the Powerplay this season: it has been their weakest passage with the ball, with three wickets at an economy rate of 9.11. Their bowlers have been the strongest during the middle overs (7-15th), taking 22 wickets, the most, at an economy rate of 7.68. Royal Challengers’ economy rate of 8.67 in the middle overs is, by contrast, the second poorest among teams this season, and they have taken 12 wickets in that phase. Their bowlers have been most effective in the Powerplay with 10 wickets at an economy rate of 8.25 Manish Pandey has hit 11 sixes in the tournament, already his personal best in an IPL season. He has, however, had a bigger impact with the bat: 236 of his 245 runs in the tournament so far have come outside of the Powerplay overs, the most by a batsman this season. To put that in perspective from Knight Riders’ point of view, the next most successful batsman for them outside of the Powerplay is Robin Uthappa with 138 runs. Pandey’s contribution to Knight Riders’ tally outside of the Powerplay stands at 35.54%.

Fulham Make First Bid For "Talented" £120k-p/w Star

Fulham have made an opening bid for Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, however it has been knocked back by the Blues, according to a recent report from The Daily Mail.

What's the latest Fulham transfer news?

Fulham are looking at strengthening their attacking options this summer, however they have already missed out on a couple of their targets, with former Coventry City striker Victor Gyokeres recently agreeing a deal with Portuguese side Sporting CP.

The Cottagers have also rejected the chance to hand a Premier League return to attacking midfielder Brendan Aaronson, with the USMNT star recently joining Union Berlin on loan from Leeds United.

Marco Silva may need to start thinking about bringing in a replacement for Aleksandar Mitrovic, with Football Insider recently reporting that Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal are confident of completing a deal to sign the Serbian striker this summer.

Not only that, Manor Solomon's departure means that new wide options may also be required at Craven Cottage, and Fulham have recently made their interest in signing Hudson-Odoi very clear.

According to a report from The Daily Mail, the Cottagers have now submitted their opening offer for the 22-year-old, who is set on leaving his boyhood club, as he approaches the final year of his £120k-per-week contract at Stamford Bridge.

New manager Mauricio Pochettino is unable to guarantee the Englishman consistent game time following the arrival of Noni Madueke, as well as several other stars in January and last summer.

However, the bid has been rejected by Chelsea, with the Blues unhappy with the offer they received, and it remains to be seen whether Fulham come back to the negotiating table with a new proposal.

Is Hudson-Odoi leaving Chelsea?

It is no wonder the 22-year-old has his heart set on leaving this summer, as he was sent out on loan during the 2022-23 campaign, making a total of 14 Bundesliga appearances for Bayer Leverkusen, however he did not manage to impress.

During his time with the German club, the Cobham academy graduate failed to score a single league goal, weighing in with just one assist, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be a good signing for Fulham this summer.

Hailed as "amazingly talented" by football scout Jacek Kulig, the winger is a very confident dribbler of the ball, ranking in the 87th percentile for progressive carries per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

A move to a club where he receives consistent game time could be exactly what the three-time England international needs at this stage of his career, having only been used sporadically for Chelsea over the past few years.

When he has received consistent game time, Hudson-Odoi has often impressed, recording one goal and five assists for Chelsea in the 2019-20 campaign, while he also has a total of four Champions League goals to his name.

Fulham should test the waters with another offer for the Chelsea ace in the coming days, as he could be a fantastic addition to Silva's squad.

Arsenal: CBS reporter shares Arteta’s "classic" transfer plan

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta won't rush into selling midfielder Thomas Partey until he has had a chance to fully 'assess' the situation and his potential replacement, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Is Thomas Partey leaving Arsenal and who have they been linked with?

According to The Daily Mail, Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli are continuing to pursue Ghana international Partey this summer as he mulls over his future at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners are reportedly open to selling the £200k-a-week ace to help recoup funds for new signing Declan Rice and have targeted Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia as a potential replacement.

As per the same outlet, Ajax attacking midfielder Mohamed Kudus is another player of interest to Arteta, who is eyeing a £40 million move for Partey's international compatriot.

Outgoings are said to be the main focus for the Spaniard at present; however, Arsenal haven't ruled out dipping their toe back into the market if they right player becomes available.

Last term, Partey made 40 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, registering three goals along the way in their failed Premier League title bid, as per Transfermarkt.

90min have cited that Partey has joined Arsenal on their pre-season tour of the United States and is said to be someone that Arteta would also be open to keeping hold of despite putting feelers out to gauge interest in his services.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jacobs thinks that Arteta will take his time to 'assess' the situation before reaching a conclusion in his own time.

Jacobs told FFC: "I think the other thing with Arteta is that he wants first to assess in pre-season, who he's kind of got and where that kind of chemistry is to make sure that they buy in the right position. I think that this is very classic Arteta. If we go back to the Arsenal interest in Youri Tielemans, who's now at Aston Villa, when Arsenal did personal terms with Youri Tielemans, they didn't pull the trigger and they waited because they wanted to assess their squad and their chemistry and their balance because Fabio Vieira had come in.

"Even with Tielemans, it was at the right time to get him in. In the end, they decided that it wasn't and I think the same with Mohamed Kudus because, obviously, he's a different midfielder to Romeo Lavia. So that's the intrigue in all of this, will Arsenal let Partey go and then bring in someone like Lavia, or will they move for an attacking midfielder and winger like Kudus, who's young and has a strong profile, but it's maybe not necessarily what Arsenal need right now in terms of priority."

Have Arsenal got anyone else on their radar at this stage of the window?

The Sun report that Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is a person of interest to Arsenal and it is said that the Gunners could do battle with arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur to try and land the Brazilian enforcer.

Discussions are also underway between Arsenal and Gremio regarding 23-year-old midfielder Bitello, who could be available for a relatively inexpensive fee of £8.5 million this window, according to 90min.

Bitello

Croatian youngster Martin Baturina, who plies his trade for Dinamo Zagreb, is another target for the Gunners following his exemplary performances at the UEFA EURO Under-21 Championships, as per The Evening Standard.

Only time will tell to see if Arteta has any unexpected aces up his sleeve between now and the close of play in the market as rumours continue to swirl concerning potential incomings at the Emirates.

Cricket Australia’s team performance executive, Pat Howard, will remain in his position until 2019 after being handed a two-year contract extension. Howard’s contract as executive general manager, team performance, was due to expire at the end of June, but he has agreed to stay on further.Howard was originally appointed to the newly-created role in 2011, following the Argus review, and has been a pivotal figure in the direction of Australian cricket during the past six years. Although Howard has been retained, CA has lost several key figures in the past year, including former commercial boss Mike McKenna, and most recently head of operations, Sean Cary.”Pat is a dynamic, passionate executive and the board and I are delighted that he has agreed to extend his term,” James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia CEO, said. “He has led the evolution of a new team performance structure and success-driven culture for both men’s and women’s cricket in Australia and we see his ongoing contribution as integral to our future plans.”Among many other things, Pat has driven the improvement of structures and systems that support the Australian Cricket Pathway for all young players, with a firm eye on identifying and nurturing talent at an early stage and enabling them with the best opportunities to perform at the highest possible level.”A former professional rugby player, Howard has been at the helm of Australia’s performance through significant ups and downs, with highs including the 2013-14 Ashes clean sweep, the 2015 World Cup triumph at home, and a return to No.1 in the Test rankings last year. Continued struggles in the subcontinent have remained an issue, although Australia’s recent competitive performance in India was encouraging.”In sport there is always highs and lows but if I was to reflect, I am particularly pleased with how much our pathways and talent identification systems have grown, with more than 300 contracted male and female players, as well as the coaching pathway for coaches in Australian cricket,” Howard said. “The cricket landscape is changing rapidly and the need to continue to adapt will be important, this means there is still a lot to achieve.”What the previous 12 months has shown is that we have a lot of talent and depth in the system to be ready for these changes. The goal hasn’t changed, we want to be number one in all three formats across men’s and women’s cricket.”

ICC mulls scrapping Champions Trophy

Cricket’s world body is considering scrapping the event in favour of two expanded World T20 tournaments in a four-year cycle

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Jun-2017

David Richardson discussed the possibility of two World T20s in a four-year cycle that could involve 16 or even 20 teams in a bid to globalise the game•Getty Images

The ICC is once again mulling over the prospect of scrapping the Champions Trophy, in favour of two expanded World T20 tournaments in a four-year cycle. Talk of the impending demise of the tournament has become almost a ritual. And with the next edition tentatively inked in for 2021, in India, David Richardson, the ICC CEO, said the body is considering scrapping the event to capitalize on the popularity of the T20 format to open the tournament up to more teams.”It’s always been quite difficult to distinguish or differentiate between the two 50-over global events,” Richardson said. “With the World Cup becoming a ten-team event, it’s almost like the World Cup is becoming more like the Champions Trophy, which I think is a good thing.”I think it (World Cup) will still be a longer event. The World Cup format will allow the best chance for the best four teams to get into the semifinals. So it takes away the risk of maybe a rain-affected game or one poor game having a huge impact on the tournament like it can be in this tournament (Champions Trophy). But still, highly competitive matches hopefully.”And then, whether the Champions Trophy in 2021 stays a Champions Trophy, or we move to two World T20s – that still needs to be discussed and settled. It’s a possibility, yes. I wouldn’t say it is categorically going to happen because, as we’ve seen, the Champions Trophy on its own is a very good event and very well-supported, particularly in the UK, where you get support for all teams. So let’s not be too hasty in writing it off, but to be honest and frank, there is consideration for moving towards two World T20s in a four-year cycle.”Two World T20s in a four-year cycle, Richardson said, gave the ICC a chance to open the tournament to more Associate teams, a balm to the decision to curtail the number of teams at the 2019 World Cup to ten. That decision drew flak from Associate players, with Ireland and Scotland cricketers quite vocal.”Having two World T20s in a four-year cycle gives us an opportunity to globalise the game to a great extent, open the tournament to more teams – 16 or maybe even in a longer term to 20 teams,” Richardson said. “It’s easier to be competitive in that format, and thus easier to accommodate more teams.”Richardson’s thoughts will hardly come as a surprise. In 2012, it was decided that the last edition of the tournament would be held in 2013, as the ICC sought to introduce a World Test Championship from 2017, and there was talk of scrapping it even as long ago as the time of the 2009 event. However, the significant commercial success of the tournament in England in 2013 – a short, sharp competition that featured eight teams – led to its retention at the expense of a World Test Championship. The ICC, however, is discussing the idea of a two-year Test league, with a 9-3 format – the top nine Test countries compete among themselves and against the three lower-ranked teams comprising Zimbabwe, and most likely Ireland and Afghanistan (depending on whether they earn Test status), which could also put some strain on the international calendar. The 2017 edition, Richardson said, highlighted the importance of context, and the ICC CEO was happy with the success of the tournament.”Overall, very satisfied with the Champions Trophy (2017). Across all aspects of the event, really, from the enthusiasm of the volunteers – cricketeers, as they were called – to the broadcaster viewership, the digital content that we put out, umpiring, player behaviour, pitches … everything went well. The cricket has been great. It shows that if you’ve got context and competitive teams, you will have a great event.”

Arsenal: Arteta "genuinely" interested in signing "golden boy"

Arsenal have Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus 'on the list' at the Emirates Stadium this summer; however, any prospective move for the Ghana international will only come about if Thomas Partey were to be sold this window, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Is Mohammed Kudus moving to Arsenal?

According to The Athletic, Chelsea look to have stolen a march on Arsenal by making contact with Ajax over a potential swoop for Kudus this summer.

The report states that no official bid has been made by the Blues; however, the 22-year-old is valued at around £40 million by Ajax amid strong interest from Arsenal in addition to Chelsea in his signature.

Last term, Kudus, who has been hailed as a "golden boy", was in fine form for Ajax despite their disappointing campaign from a collective perspective, registering 18 goals and seven assists in 42 appearances, as per Transfermarkt.

Interviewed by TEAMtalk, journalist Charles Watts confirmed that Arsenal are definitely admirers of Kudus, stating: "He [Kudus] is definitely a player that they like. “I’ve seen the recent reports that they’re potentially looking to step up that interest a bit later on in the window, which wouldn’t surprise me if that is the case.

Earlier this year, Manchester United were also heavily linked with a swoop for Kudus, who Dutch boss Erik Ten Hag is believed to be a huge fan of at Old Trafford, as per talkSPORT. Nevertheless, no such progress has been made on that front by the Red Devils and for now, it looks like Chelsea and Arsenal will battle it out for Kudus.

In the case of Partey, the £200k-a-week ace has attracted interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, though Mikel Arteta has now indicated that he plans to keep him around for 2023/24, according to Telegraph Sport.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jacobs thinks that any move from Arsenal to try and acquire Kudus will hinge on the future of Partey.

Jacobs stated: "Arsenal are genuinely interested in Mohammed Kudus, for sure.

"First of all, they need to resolve the situation of Thomas Partey, who has interest from Saudi Arabia. Outgoings will be key to understand what Arsenal do next, but Kudus is one player on the list."

Who else could Arsenal sign this window?

According to Aksam via Sport Witness, Arsenal are believed to have 'approached' Galatasaray over full-back Sacha Boey amid competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Juventus for his signature.

The Sun report that Arsenal have entered the race to sign AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi, who is also a target for Manchester United and Chelsea.

Axel Disasi

Ligue 1 AS Monaco are said to be holding out for a fee of £34 million for Disasi; however, the urgency surrounding the Gunners' search for defensive reinforcements has eased due to Jurrien Timber's recent arrival from Ajax.

Crystal Palace playmaker Michael Olise is on the radar at the Emirates Stadium, as Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have all 'registered an interest' in trying to entice the France Under-21 international away from Selhurst Park, as per 90min.

Barcelona winger Ferran Torres is on a shortlist in north London as the Gunners scout the market for a wide player ahead of the campaign getting underway.
