Glasgow Rangers: Ferguson says Kent is a £20m in the making

Former Ibrox legend Barry Ferguson says that Glasgow Rangers’ Ryan Kent is a £20m player in the making, and that the Gers would be crazy to sell the winger this summer for anything lower than that.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from Ibrox in the past few days, with Leeds United said to be interested in him – so much so, they were even reported to have made a £10m offer for the Liverpudlian. However, it seems Kent himself wants to stay at the club, whilst the Gers will reject any bid that comes in for him.

Ferguson certainly believes that he is worth much more. He wrote for The Daily Record:

“Take £10m for Kent and bring in three new players? What planet are these guys on?

“Gerrard could spend the whole lot on just one new arrival and it wouldn’t be enough to replace like with like.

We’re talking here about a seriously talented football player and when I look at him I see someone who has not yet fulfilled all of his potential.

“Rangers would be crazy to even contemplate letting him go at that price because he’s a £20m player in the making and I truly believe he’s ready right now to take his game to another level.”

Kent is a divisive player north of the border. When he is on it, he has come in for praise for the way he affects the game, but he has also received criticism both from fans and pundits, with many questioning his ability to put the ball into the back of the net.

The Gers spent £7m on Kent, and he has started the season positively by scoring twice in the first four Premiership matches. As Ferguson says, with the season already under way, it would take something truly special for the club to part ways with one of their star players.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs ready to beat Crystal Palace to sign Championship star

Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring West Brom defender Nathan Ferguson after a move to Crystal Palace failed to materialise, according to Football Insider.

Palace were on the brink of signing him in January, but the deal fell through, and Tottenham are now ready to make a move for Ferguson this summer.

The 19-year-old is widely expected to leave the Hawthorns when his contract expires in July.

Ferguson will become a free agent next month, which will appeal to Spurs the most. Although he started the season as a centre-half, the 19-year-old can play on either flank.

While Palace are also likely to try to sign him again, a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is surely more attractive, amid interest from a number of European clubs including AC Milan and Schalke.

Despite their troubles, the Lilywhites still have the financial power to out-muscle the Eagles in a transfer battle.

Football Insider notes relations between the teenager and West Bromwich Albion have hit an all-time low, which is an opening Daniel Levy could exploit.

Following months of stagnant negotiations, Levy jumped on a plane to Croatia to convince Luka Modric, who was 22-years-old at the time, to move to White Hart Lane (The Independent).

The right-back position has proven to be particularly problematic, as Spurs have arguably struggled to fill the role since Kyle Walker left for Manchester City.

While Ferguson is yet to play at the same level as the England international, he has impressed for Albion over the course of the season so far.

Coupled with the fact he is currently available for £4m in compensation, he would certainly be a shrewd signing to make.

Leeds target Said Benrahma delivered a masterclass for Brentford

With Leeds’ return to the Premier League secured, the Whites can already turn towards the transfer window and how they can improve their squad from their Championship-winning season.

One man who’s been linked with a move to Elland Road, is Brentford winger Said Benrahma. Reports in recent days have suggested that Leeds are ready to spend around €26m (£23.6m) to sign the Algeria international, and after another masterclass display on Wednesday night, it’s no surprise to see why.

Benrahma was the star of the show as Brentford knocked out Swansea in their Championship play-off semi-final, assisting one of the goals and proving to be a real handful in a 3-0 win for the Bees.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

As per Sofascore, the 24-year-old provided four key passes in total, which to put in context, was only two fewer than what Swansea managed as an entire team.

Benrahma was at his absolute best for Thomas Frank’s side, showing the kind of creativity that could go down a treat at Elland Road with Bielsa.

He had a 100% dribble success rate, had 63 touches of the ball (only teammate Mathias Jensen had more), and was very unlucky not to get on the score-sheet himself after hitting the woodwork twice.

If Brentford do earn promotion to the Premier League themselves, then it of course becomes a much more difficult task for Victor Orta to try and convince them to sell one of their prized assets.

But even if they do, Benrahma’s quality and potential at just 24, shows just why Leeds must absolutely break the bank for one of the star performers of this 2019/2020 campaign.

The Whites have seen first hand what the Algerian can do. This summer gives them the perfect opportunity to make sure he produces moments of magic like he did on Wednesday, in a Leeds shirt next season.

Tottenham Hotspur: Jose Mourinho identifies Stefan Savic as top transfer target

According to Todofichajes, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has identified Atletico Madrid star Stefan Savic as his top transfer target in the summer.

Mourinho has made it clear he wants to add to his defensive options before the start of next season, as it appears Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth could be heading out the door.

Indeed, Vertonghen is reportedly ready to leave the Lilywhites for free as his contract is set to expire in a matter of weeks.

The Spanish outlet claims the Spurs head coach believes Savic would be a suitable replacement and is keen to sign him when the transfer market opens.

After arriving at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium from Fiorentina for £22.5m in 2015, the 29-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s highest-rated defenders, due to a transformation under Diego Simeone.

The Montenegro international, who has been capped 50 times by his country, famously won the Premier League with rivals Manchester City back in 2012.

Savic has made 14 appearances in La Liga for Simeone’s side this season, making 1.1 tackles per game, averaging 1.4 interceptions, and completing a staggering 4.2 clearances on average.

In contrast, Vertonghen has played in 19 games in the Premier League, providing 2.1 tackles on average, registering 1.6 interceptions, and attempting 2.9 clearances per game.

Evidently, the Madrid stalwart is an upgrade on the wantaway veteran, as he has been rewarded a higher WhoScored rating of 6.82 for his performances throughout the season.

However, the Montenegrin is currently valued at £22.95m via Transfermarkt, and it is unclear if Daniel Levy will be willing to break the bank for the centre-back. Indeed, Mourinho is well aware he will have to cope with a severely restricted budget in the transfer market, due to the economic uncertainty surrounding the pandemic.

Tottenham fans, should the board sign Stefan Savic in the summer? Let us know down below!

Potential Sissoko return relieves pressure on Pochettino

According to the Tottenham Hotspur website, Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko is in contention to play in the League Cup semi-final against Chelsea tomorrow.

Spurs carry a slender 1-0 lead into their second leg at Stamford Bridge, but have had a raft of injuries since their first meeting. Both Harry Kane and Dele Alli have sustained serious injuries, while Son Heung-min is with South Korea at the Asian Games.

Kane’s ankle injury stole the headlines after Tottenham’s loss to Man United at Wembley two weeks ago, but Sissoko also sustained a groin injury in that match as well, as he hobbled off just before half time. The club feared that he would miss up to a month of football, so this is a timely return that will ease a huge amount of pressure on manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentinian would have been struggling to work out how he would shape his team ahead of the trip across London to Chelsea tomorrow. The Frenchman relieves a huge amount of that pressure, particularly due to his versatility.

Sissoko has primarily been deployed as a defensive midfielder so far this season, but with Harry Winks in the team, and Eric Dier potentially making a return, Sissoko could play in a more attacking role, coming straight in for Alli.

Sissoko offers something different to Alli, and his direct dribbling and attitude may actually be an advantage against a Chelsea team that will surely dominate possession. The 29-year-old offers a counter-attacking option further up the field which Spurs lacked in the first leg when they were under pressure. This return could be pivotal to success tomorrow.

World football's governing body has an insurance policy – the FIFA Club Protection Programme (CPP) – that will pay a player's salary from 28 days to a year with a maximum of £6.5m if they are injured while on international duty. That means the policy will have to hand that maximum figure over to Al-Hilal.

DID YOU KNOW?

Having the injured Neymar on their books will cost Al-Hilal much more than £6.5 million, however. The player is on a deal that will cost a reported £276 million ($351m) over a two-year spell.

Neymar's time in Saudi Arabia has been far from smooth since his arrival in August. He missed the first four Saudi Pro League matches for which he was eligible due to a muscle issue and has featured just five times this season, scoring one goal.

'Magic on the field' – Nani on being inspired by Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi's MLS arrival, his future and the upcoming Beautiful Game

GOAL sat down with the Portuguese star to discuss a variety of topics as he returns to Orlando this weekend.

Even after all he's been through, all the success and trophies, Nani is still feeling a little bit star struck. A cornerstone of a Manchester United dynasty with Champions League, Premier League and European Championship trophies to his name, there are still moments that make him feel like a kid falling in love with the game for the first time.

This weekend is one of those moments. The Portuguese star is back in Orlando at his old stadium for the second iteration of the Beautiful Game, a superstar clash of legends and current stars. This year's game will, of course, include Nani, who will play alongside legends like Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Cafu and Rivaldo, as well as Vinicius Jr, Joao Felix, Eder Militao, Willian and Lucas Moura.

It's a who's who of superstars, with Nani having earned his place among them. Still, there's one player that the former Manchester United winger is most looking forward to playing with most, one that has inspired him throughout his career. That man, alongside Roberto Carlos, will be hosting the event and whose name will be on the marquee: the legendary Ronaldinho.

Ahead of the match, GOAL caught up with Nani to discuss how Ronaldinho inspired him, the upcoming Beautiful Game, his expectations for Lionel Messi in MLS and what's next in his career after becoming a free agent.

The Beautiful GameInspired by Ronaldinho's magic

Nani remembers his clashes with Ronaldinho. He quickly points to the 2009-10 Champions League round of 16, when his Manchester United team got the better of the Brazilian's AC Milan. At the time, Nani was a 24-year-old rising star, already with a Champions League under his belt, but Ronaldinho's legendary status had already been cemented for some time.

All these years later, the Portuguese star admits that he always looked up to the Brazilian icon, and for good reason. Nani was always known for his dribbling and skill on the ball, with those attributes taking him right to the top of the sport. For a player with that skillset, is there a better role model than Ronaldinho?

This match, this Beautiful Game in Orlando, now gives Nani another chance to share the pitch with his idol once again. He played against him in last year's edition, a 12-10 win for Team Roberto Carlos, and he believes that Ronaldinho, even at age 43, is still a player with magic in his feet.

"A player I loved a lot during my youth and followed a lot when he was in his prime was Ronaldinho," Nani told GOAL. "I've always said that. Obviously now, playing with him at a time when he's not a professional anymore, he's retired already, but he still has the talent and the skills. It's always amazing to be there around a player that you used to appreciate a lot.

"The way he used to play, the way he made magic on the field, I copied him so many times and tried to learn from him. At this point, it's nice to have the opportunity to be next to him, talk a little bit, see the human side."

That's one of the most exciting parts of this game for Nani: the chance to share not just a game, but a weekend, with some of the sport's greats. It's an opportunity to take a step back from the battles that he's had with a few of them in the past and to, instead, kick the ball around with some heroes.

The game isn't about wins or losses, and everyone on the field knows that. All involved will instead play a bit more like Ronaldinho, with big smiles on their faces and a bit of confidence in their feet.

"This is a different type of game," Nani says. "It's not a game where there's pressure or where a player has to concentrate or do the maximum on the field. It's a game to enjoy, a game to make people excited with skills and having fun. It's a lot of smiles and a lot of good energy.

"The most important thing is to share the pitch with some people you used to follow in your youth. For me, it's good to be next to Ronaldinho and Roberto Carlos. Even the young players coming up right now, there will be some players there as well like Joao Felix and Vinicius, players who are shining in this moment. It's nice to share the pitch with them, have fun and try and show some skills on the field."

AdvertisementMark ThorA return to the Lions' den

The Beautiful Game doesn't just give Nani the chance to play alongside his heroes. It also gives him the opportunity to return to Orlando and play in front of a fanbase that remains close to his heart.

Nani joined Orlando City in 2019, assuming the role of the face of the franchise following the departure of Kaka. He scored 31 goals in 88 games during his three-year stay in MLS, earning two All-Star selections during his time in the U.S.

He left the club after the 2021 season, playing six months for Serie A side Venezia before spending the 2022-23 season in Australia with Melbourne Victory. Now, two-and-a-half years after leaving Florida, it's safe to say he's glad to be back.

"It will be a special day for me to come back to Exploria Stadium, a stadium where I had so many beautiful moments in front of fantastic fans that supported me a lot when I was here," Nani said. "I'm looking forward to that moment. It means a lot to me."

He continued: "I was always trying to follow [Orlando City]. Obviously, I followed a couple of games. I saw Orlando's draw against Philadelphia, which is always a tough game. I do my best to try and follow the games, but I was so far [away in Australia] and the time difference makes a lot of difference and sometimes the games weren't on the TV, but I try to follow.

"MLS has been improving a lot with a lot of new players coming in the next few months."

Twitter'Messi will enjoy MLS a lot'

While Nani still has a special place in his heart for Orlando City, it's the Lions' rivals, Inter Miami, that have pulled off the signing of the century: Lionel Messi.

The Argentine is set to arrive in MLS this summer, becoming the biggest name yet to move to MLS. The league has had countless superstars, like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry, to name a few, but none are at the level of Messi, whose arrival promises to change the game in the U.S. forever.

It won't be easy, though, as many of the above names can attest to. MLS is far from an easy league, even for those that have dominated in Europe. It's fast-paced and physical, for sure, while players also have to adjust to the climate, travel and different types of turf.

Nani learned to adapt throughout his three-year stay, and he has no doubt Messi will, too, once he arrives in Miami.

"I think, for him, it will be a very good experience," Nani said. "You have to have the power to manage the small things that will make things difficult for him like turf and the long flights. He can manage that. He doesn't have to do it for all of the games. He'll enjoy it a lot.

"Playing in America was amazing for me and I think everyone likes the lifestyle here, and the momentum of the league is fantastic. For him and for the fans that follow MLS, it will be a very good time because he is a great player who can deliver fantastic football, and that's the most important thing."

Nani went on to reflect positively on his MLS experience as a whole, even if his own tenure was heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Still, despite seeing most of the 2020 season derailed by Covid, he says the experience, as a whole, was fantastic and he found lifelong friends in Orlando.

"I enjoyed my time in MLS. Those three years were amazing," he said. "We had some bad moments where we had to manage Covid, but that was part of the good moments. Sometimes in life, you can't have everything perfect, and we all managed to learn from that. We did well, even when Covid appeared. We were able to train hard and continue to play the game. We found solutions and we were determined here in Orlando.

"What I can say is that my time in Orlando was fantastic, was perfect. I had a great time here, made a lot of friends. I enjoyed playing in MLS, so any player who has the opportunity to come here, they'll enjoy it as well."

Getty ImagesWhat's next?

As he prepares to take the field for the Beautiful Game, Nani says he is in great physical condition, despite a season-ending injury during his time in Melbourne.

The winger ruptured his ACL in January, ending his season prematurely after just 11 total appearances for the A-League side. He recently returned to the field at his former home, Old Trafford, coming off the bench for the World XI side in a 4-2 win over England in this year's Soccer Aid match.

With that experience under his belt, he says he feels good to go for the Beautiful Game and he hopes to put on a show.

"I feel good. I've been training, been preparing myself to be at my best," he said. "I had the game a couple of weeks ago, Soccer Aid, and I felt great. I'm excited for the moment to participate in this game because we are players and we want to play the game and do what we love to do: touch the ball, try some skills, score some goals and enjoy, because it will be an evening to make people happy and that's the most important thing."

As for what's next, Nani is keeping his options open. His contract with Melbourne Victory expired in May, making him a free agent. He says his plan is to keep playing for as long as he can and he believes that he still has what it takes to truly contribute to a team, even at 36 years old.

"For the moment, I feel like I'm just thinking about the game and playing until I understand that I have to decide and change my job," he said. "At this moment, I feel very good. I'm in condition to play and I can deliver a bit of quality as usual."

He'll get that chance on Saturday in Orlando as he joins some of his heroes in front of a crowd that has idolized him. After that, who knows?

"Until I feel I can't, I'll continue to play," he said. "As I've said, we all love this game, and we have to do what we love."

Beckham, Ronaldo, Ward-Prowse & most Premier League free kick goals

A couple of Manchester United legends figure prominently on a list of dead-ball specialists that includes plenty of modern day greats

There are few greater sights in football than seeing a spectacular free kick curled over a defensive wall and into the top corner, with the Premier League fortunate enough to have been graced by many iconic performers who have perfected that art.

Manchester United legend David Beckham was always a threat over a dead-ball, for the Red Devils and England, while Cristiano Ronaldo picked up that baton when inheriting a famous No.7 shirt at Old Trafford.

All-time greats such as Thierry Henry and Gianfranco Zola made a habit of finding the target from set-pieces during their memorable stints in London at Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively.

However, it's now Southampton star James Ward-Prowse who has risen the leaderboard to challenge Beckham, moving just one back of the icon with his goal against Chelsea on February 18, 2023.

Who, though, has scored the most goals from direct free kicks in Premier League history? GOAL takes a look…

Getty1David Beckham | 18 goals

A graduate of Manchester United’s fabled Class of ‘92 and a man that sits inside the Premier League’s Hall of Fame. Won six top-flight titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League during his time at Old Trafford and will forever be remembered for his set-piece prowess. Registered his first free-kick goal against Southampton in October 1996 and his 18th against Everton in May 2003, with efforts against the likes of Liverpool, West Ham, Leeds and Manchester City recorded along the way.

AdvertisementGetty2James Ward-Prowse | 17 goals

A south coast native who emerged out of Southampton’s academy system to make his senior debut in October 2011. The England international midfielder has spent his entire career to date with the Saints, with over 300 appearances made in the top flight. He has been a model of consistency throughout, particularly from free kicks.

He finished 2022 with a December 31 free kick goal against Fulham before repeating the feat on January 14, 2023, against Everton, and on February 18, 2023, against Chelsea.

Getty3Cristiano Ronaldo | 12 goals

There are not too many records that an iconic Portuguese forward does not hold, but he will have to go some in order to match or better Beckham in the free kick stakes. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has never been prolific over a dead-ball, despite being entrusted with set-piece duty on a regular basis by club and country. Arguably his most memorable effort in the Premier League came during a first stint at United in January 2008 when his famous knuckleball strike fizzed past a motionless David James in the Portsmouth goal.

The Frenchman remains the all-time top goalscorer on the red half of north London, with his record-setting haul of 228 efforts including plenty of spectacular free kicks.
