Aston Villa: Fans react to Trezeguet rumours

Aston Villa are open to moving Trezeguet on during the January transfer window.

That’s according to The Daily Mail’s Tom Collomosse, which has had some Villa fans talking on social media.

Villa have already been extremely busy when it comes to transfer activity this month, with Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne arriving.

Axel Tuanzebe cut short his season-long loan to move to Napoli and Anwar El Ghazi is joining Everton on a temporary basis, while Trezeguet is another player who could depart over the coming weeks.

According to Collomosse, Trezeguet is thought to be available for transfer this month. The 27-year-old is currently away with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations and has missed the majority of the campaign through injury.

His first appearance of the season came in the 2-1 defeat to Brentford, and it seems as that could turn out to be his final outing in a Villa shirt.

Villa fans react

@villareport shared Collomosse’s claim regarding the winger on Twitter. This is what these fans had to say in reply, with a mixed response.

“Whilst it feels harsh on El Ghazi and Trez it would seem to me that Gerrard is getting rid of those who aren’t quite good enough for the level he wants. Removing sentiment from it I agree, but I’d be sad to see them both go for various/obvious reasons.”

Newcastle handed Hugo Ekitike boost

A huge update has emerged on Newcastle United’s chances of landing Hugo Ekitike from Stade Reims this summer.

What’s the talk?

Journalist Ryan Taylor has relayed quotes from the Ligue 1 side’s president stating that the striker will move on from the club at the end of the season.

Fabrizio Romano reported on deadline day in January that a Toon deal for the young Frenchman fell through in the final hours, with the Magpies now looking to resurrect their interest.

Taylor Tweeted: “Newcastle have been told they can sign Hugo Ekitike this summer after January deadline day deal collapsed. NUFC Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot: “Hugo will be allowed to go & he’s probably going to leave.” Also interest from West Ham, Wolves, Fulham.”

Eddie Howe will be delighted

The Magpies head coach will surely be delighted with this news as it comes as a huge boost to the club’s hopes of signing the striker.

Reims are seemingly resigned to him departing and this means that Newcastle can swoop in to strike an agreement with them this summer. Their talks with the Ligue 1 outfit in January could also give them a leg up over their rivals as they will already have a relationship with their French counterparts and will know, roughly, how much money they will want for him after discussing a deal earlier this year.

Howe will also be buzzing with this update as the prospect of signing Ekitike is an exciting one. He is a promising young talent who has also shown that he has the quality to make an impact at senior level in a top European league.

At the age of 19, he has the majority of his career left ahead of him to develop and hone his skills. This means that he would come in as a player for the future as he would be able to play for the club for a number of years, improving as he gains more experience.

However, he would also be a fantastic addition in the short term as he has been superb in Ligue 1 this season. He has scored nine goals and provided two assists in 14 starts in the division as he has shown that he can score on a regular basis, which is a quality Newcastle have lacked this term.

Callum Wilson is the club’s top scorer with six goals in 14 games and one of only four players with more than two goals in the Premier League. Therefore, Ekitike would be an excellent signing for the Toon in the short and long term.

Abdur Razzak is making the difference – Alan Butcher

Alan Butcher, the Zimbabwe coach, has said Abdur Razzak, the Bangladesh left-arm spinner, has been the difference between the two sides during their ODI series in Bangladesh

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Dec-2010Alan Butcher, the Zimbabwe coach, has said Bangladesh left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak has been the difference between the two sides during the ongoing one-day series. Razzak took 4 for 14 in the third ODI in Mirpur on Monday, helping Bangladesh to a win and a 2-1 lead in the series. He now has 13 wickets in the series and many of them have come in a clutch, early in his spells.”Razzak is winning matches for them as a bowler,” Butcher said. “Our bowlers, though effective, haven’t given a match-winning performance, so I think that’s the difference.”It’s disappointing that we keep giving him three wickets in two overs. It is as much a technical problem as anything else. Whether it is psychological or that we are not picking him, we have to work on it in the next couple of days.”Razzak, who has taken 53 wickets against Zimbabwe at an average of 15.30, said the conditions were helping him. “I am confident and there’s help from the wicket,” he said. “These two things are combining and working in my favour.”Bangladesh bowled Zimbabwe out for 181 on Monday and Razzak was supported by the seamers, with Shafiul Islam taking 4 for 43 and Mashrafe Mortaza, who missed the series against New Zealand in October with an ankle injury, taking his first international wicket since July. “The performance of the fast bowlers was the most pleasing part of the match,” Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, said. “Mashrafe-‘s bowling was a big positive. I said before that it would take him a few matches to get back to his old self, so that’s what happened today.”Shakib set up the win with his 73 that took Bangladesh to a total of 246, but was out in the batting Powerplay for the second time in the series. “It seems my responsibility is till the Powerplay,” he said. “The moment it starts, I’m gone. We should work at it but I don’t know what’s going on.”In the first match, which Zimbabwe won by nine runs, the batting Powerplay worked against Bangladesh as they lost three wickets for 25. On Monday, they fared much better and scored 46 runs during the restrictions, which were in force for the last five overs. “We didn’t take the Powerplay earlier because we don’t do well in it,” Shakib said. “If we took it earlier, the innings would’ve been over earlier. I don’t think we did too badly [today]; we scored over 40 and anything over 50 is good. We played 10 dot balls in this Powerplay, so if a boundary came off one of those balls, it would have been better.”Shakib said he was happy with the assistance his bowlers got in Mirpur, the venue of the first three games. “Whenever we have bowled in this series, we have got help from the wicket,” he said. “We bowled first twice, and today the wicket hardly changed throughout the day. It worked as an advantage for us.”The last two matches of the series will be played in Chittangong, which, along with Mirpur, will host Bangladesh’s league games in the 2011 World Cup. If Bangladesh make it past the first round – and their backers think they have a fair chance given their mastery of home conditions – their quarterfinal fixture could also be a home game.

Lee sets sights on World Cup

Brett Lee wants to help Australia escape their Ashes misery with success in the limited-overs formats and a tilt at a fourth consecutive World Cup title

Andrew McGlashan in Canberra09-Jan-2011Brett Lee wants to help Australia escape their Ashes misery with success in the limited-overs formats and a tilt at a fourth consecutive World Cup title. Lee is back in the national set-up for the Twenty20 internationals and hopes to be part of the 50-over squad against England and beyond.Lee, 34, believes he still has plenty to offer Australia having retired from Test cricket last year to preserve his body for the shorter formats. However, he had to fly home from the World Twenty20 due to injury before he played a match and also missed the tours to England and India. He was overlooked for the three ODIs against Sri Lanka before the Ashes, but feels primed to lead the attack again.”I love it when people right you off and say you won’t be back,” he said. “Or a doctor says you probably won’t get back. Ten or twelve ops later I’m still hanging in there. If the body still feels good I’ll try to keep playing. My pace is back to 150kph so I’m really happy with where it is at. I don’t look at 34 and think I’m past it. I think there are a few good years ahead of me. I hope to be in the World Cup team and then let’s see what happens.”Australia’s experiment with split innings one-day cricket in their domestic 45-over tournament has worked to Lee’s advantage because he has bowled longer spells than he would have managed in traditional 50-over games and has no regrets about ditching Tests.”I’ve been bowling 12 overs each match in the 45-over competition which is more overs than I could bowl in a 50-over match,” he said. “I’m really happy with the way the ball has been coming out and have enjoying it this season. It’s easier on my body not bowling five days straight.”Lee tasted one Ashes-series loss during 2005, although was also part of the 5-0 whitewash four years, and admitted Australia and fallen from their lofty standards of previous years. “We now have to think as an Australian team that it’s behind us,” he said. “We have to leave the Ashes. England have played well and we haven’t played our best cricket. But that’s done and dusted now so we can move on and focus on the Twenty20 and one-day format.”If we can win the one-day tournament then that might ease the burden of the Ashes. As I said, congratulations to England they played really well. That’s finished. We have a new format coming up and it’s a different squad for us as well. I’m not sure what the 50-over squad will be but I know the guys who get their opportunity will be very keen to put a few wins on the board.”In the Twenty20 internationals at Adelaide and Melbourne there is the enticing prospect of Lee joining forces with Shaun Tait in a high velocity opening attack. “To have us at both ends might stir a few batsmen up,” Lee said. After facing some insipid bowling during the final two Tests, England may just find life a little tougher.

Kolkata sign up Iqbal Abdulla

Iqbal Abdulla, the Mumbai left-arm spinner, has signed a two-year deal with Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the fourth season of the IPL

Nagraj Gollapudi12-Jan-2011Iqbal Abdulla, the Mumbai left-arm spinner, has signed a two-year deal with Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the fourth season of the IPL. Abdulla, who is also a useful lower-order batsman, was at Kolkata for the first three seasons, having been picked as their Under-19 draft in the first season, and now returns as an uncapped signing. “We needed a specialist Indian spinner to accompany Shakib [al Hasan] and Yusuf Pathan and we are happy to get Iqbal,” a Kolkata spokesperson said.Kolkata are talking to at least 10 or 12 uncapped players, some of whom played for the team in the first three editions of the IPL. Bengal allrounder Laxmi Shukla, Haryana wicketkeeper-batsman Manvinder Bisla and Delhi middle-order veteran Rajat Bhatia are some of the other names the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise is in talks with it.Though Mumbai, the defending champions, were knocked out by Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals this year, Abdulla had a good season, ending as their top wicket-taker with 27 victims at an average of 22.11 in addition to notching up his maiden Ranji century, an unbeaten 150 against Saurashtra in their opening match. Abdulla averaged 47.75 with the bat in eight matches in the Ranji season. When Mumbai defended their crown in the 2009-10 season, Abdulla had a tally of 32 wickets.Even though teams have until March 8 to sign uncapped players for the IPL, which starts on April 8, franchise owners and officials have shown desperation in the last few days to latch on to quality youngsters as soon as possible.Kings XI Punjab have been lucky to get back three players who were part of their squad in the previous seasons: Punjab allrounder Love Ablish, Himachal Pradesh fast bowler Vikramjeet Malik and Uttar Pradesh left-arm quick Shalabh Srivastava have decided to stay with Punjab for the next two years. The franchise has also signed Sunny Singh and Nitin Saini, centurions for Haryana in the Ranji quarterfinals this year against Tamil Nadu, along with 23-year-old batsman Siddharth Chitnis, who made his first-class debut for Mumbai this year. The BCCI has also made it clear that it is the players that have the final say on which team they wish to join. “Franchises have full rights to scout for players in their catchment area, but uncapped players have the right to negotiate,” Niranjan Shah, BCCI vice-president, told . “We are also keeping a close watch on any underhand dealings between the players and the franchises. All agreement will be tripartite, involving the board, the player and the franchise.”

Leeds must finally sell Kiko Casilla

Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla is set for an Elland Road exit this summer according to journalist Graham Smyth…

What’s the story?

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist said: “The future of goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, who has not started a La Liga game for loan club Elche since October, will also be up in the air.

“Marsch has been impressed with both Illan Meslier and his current back-up Kristoffer Klaesson since taking over in the wake of Bielsa’s sacking and a return to Elland Road for 35-year-old Casilla feels unlikely. With a year left to run on his contract another loan move or a settlement with Leeds is almost inevitable.”

Marsch must finally sell him

The Spaniard had been on the fringes of things for Jesse Marsch’s side last season, with Illan Meslier firmly established as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

In fact, he only had the one Premier League outing to his name during the 2020/2021 campaign, with his appearance in a 1-0 defeat to Brighton back in mid-January being the only time Whites fans saw him in action in the top-flight.

And, speaking after Leeds’ FA Cup loss to Crawley Town earlier that campaign, journalist Daniel Storey even questioned whether’s he good enough to play for the club, slamming: “I think Kiko Casilla was the other game-changer in a negative sense because I don’t think he should be playing for Leeds for non-football reasons, but he probably shouldn’t be playing for Leeds for football reasons after today.”

Leeds TV podcaster, Oscar Mario, meanwhile, simply labelled him a “complete liability”.

Of course, since then, he has made the move to Spanish side Elche on a season-long loan, but things haven’t panned out for him there either.

The shot-stopper had initially started the first 12 games of the campaign in La Liga, but following a run of just two wins in that frame, was promptly dropped from the line-up against Mallorca back in early November.

Casilla has since failed to play single minute of football in the top-flight for Elche, and when you look at some of his underlying stats, it’s clear to see why he’s been shunted to the sidelines.

As per FBREF, he is the 13th-worst performing goalkeeper in La Liga when it comes to post-shot expected goals minus goals allowed, a stat that works out how likely a goalkeeper is to save a shot.

He is also the 7th-worst goalkeeper when it comes to stopping a cross into the penalty area, while he is the sixth-worst for passes completed – all in all, the Leeds man has simply been a poor performer in a poor performing side.

Marsch must surely offload the £40k-a-week earning Spaniard this summer.

Glamorgan fight back after major problems

Jim Allenby and James Harris helped promotion hopefuls Glamorgan recover from a shaky start against bottom-placed Derbyshire

13-Sep-2010
ScorecardJim Allenby and James Harris helped promotion hopefuls Glamorgan recover from a shaky start against bottom-placed Derbyshire before rain brought at early end to the first day of the County Championship Division Two encounter at Cardiff. The seventh-wicket pair shared an unbeaten 54-run stand as the hosts progressed from 66 for six before lunch to finish on 120 for 6 from 39.2 overs when play was abandoned for the day at 1630.Glamorgan captain Jamie Dalrymple won the toss and decided to bat after naming an unchanged team from the side which drew with Surrey last week. Derbyshire did not include Graham Wagg, who is set to be unveiled by Glamorgan this week as a new signing for next season.Glamorgan began solidly enough, reaching 31 without loss, but then proceeded to lose three wickets in the space of 24 balls for the addition of just 12 runs. Opener Gareth Rees, who has been struggling for form, was bowled by Jon Clare, who struck in his next over when Dalrymple – also having a poor season with the bat – was caught at third slip by Wes Durston. And two overs later Ben Wright drove loosely at Greg Smith’s first ball and was caught by Chesney Hughes at second slip without having troubled the scorers. The collapse did not stop there. Tom Maynard was next to go when he was the victim of a sharp caught and bowled by the accurate Tim Groenewald as Glamorgan slipped to 48 for 4 in the 15th over.A brief break for rain did not help as the home team lost Mark Cosgrove to the first ball from Smith after the resumption. Cosgrove, who had looked relatively secure in reaching 32, was bowled leaving the home side on 56 for five. That became 66 for 6, six overs later, when Mark Wallace drove a Steffan Jones delivery straight to Robin Peterson at extra-cover. Allenby and Harris then came together and shared an unbeaten stand of 54 for the seventh wicket either side of lunch before the umpires – David Millns and Steve Garratt – took the players from the field at 2.20pm because of rain.

Surrey release Usman Afzaal

Former England batsman Usman Afzaal has been released by Surrey leaving him searching for a new county

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Sep-2010Former England batsman Usman Afzaal has been released by Surrey leaving him searching for a new county. It is a move that was widely expected after Afzaal, 33, hadn’t featured in a first-class game since Surrey’s innings defeat to Middlesex at the end of July.Afzaal, who played for England in three Ashes Tests in 2001, joined Surrey from Northamptonshire at the end of the 2007 season and made 4328 runs in 101 games in all competitions for the county, with a first-class average of 46.44.This season, however, Surrey have backed the younger players coming through their system as they try to find a route off the lower end of the second division.Batsmen Arun Harinath (23), Tom Lancefield (19) and most recently Jason Roy (20), have all featured this summer and Surrey may also have Kevin Pietersen on their books after he joined on loan earlier this month.Surrey’s managing director Gus Mackay praised Afzaal for all he’s given the club over the last three seasons and wished him luck in finding a new county with which to continue his career: “I would like to thank Usman for his contribution to the club during his time here and wish him all the best for the future.”

Hyderabad and Pakistan Television in wicket-fest

A round-up of the first day of the fourth round of matches in Division Two of the Quaid-E-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2010An all-round bowling effort from Hyderabad ensured Pakistan Television were bundled out for 125 on the opening day at the Niaz Stadium. On a day when bowlers dominated from start to finish, Hyderabad did not fare much better against PTV’s seamers, finishing the day at 101 for 5. PTV opener Imran Ali’s 37 was the highest score from either side, and his 42-run opening stand with Raheel Majeed offered little indication of what was to follow. Legspinners Sharjeel Khan and Zahid Mahmood picked up three wickets each for Hyderabad before seamers Saad Altaf and Mohammad Ali did the damage when PTV bowled. The events at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore were in complete contrast to those at the Niaz Stadium as Khan Research Laboratories galloped to a dominant 301 for 2 against Lahore Shalimar. Opener Ali Naqvi was the only batsman to fail after Shalimar chose to field. Saaed Anwar jnr struck 12 fours in his 67 to lay the foundation before Bazid Khan and Mohammad Wasim capitalised. Wasim, who has played for Pakistan at the highest level, brought up his 25th first-class ton by stumps, while Bazid remained six short of the landmark following the unbroken 178-run stand.Opener Khalid Latif’s 64 was the only resistance offered by Karachi Whites as State Bank of Pakistan bowled them out for 187 at the National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex. Seamer Bilawal Bhatti who picked up four wickets was the wrecker-in-chief for NBP after they chose to field. Rizwan Haider chipped in with three wickets as the hosts struggled to put together partnerships. Wajihuddin’s (32) third-wicket stand of 53 with Latif guided them to 107 for 2 before the middle order misfired. SBP ensured they did not lose any wickets in the two overs they got to face, and hold all the aces going into the second day.Three half-centuries from middle-order batsmen and one from a tail-ender helped Lahore Ravi survive Quetta seamer Gohar Faiz’s maiden five-wicket haul and finish at 302 for 9 after an action packed day at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Faiz struck three early blows to leave Ravi stuttering at 37 for 3 before Fahad-ul-Haq and Sheraz Butt began the resistance. Fahad made 54 off 92 balls and added 111 with Sheraz to repair the innings before Quetta reclaimed the upper hand by claiming five wickets for 51 runs. Having batted through the collapse, Ashraf Ali ensured he did not fall by the wayside, and found a willing partner in No. 10 Tanzeel Altaf. The pair added 87 crucial runs to push Ravi towards 300 before Altaf fell for 51. Ashraf shepherded the last man Imran Haider to ensure his side was not bowled out on the first day, and was unbeaten on 72 at stumps.Peshawar failed to build on the base laid by their openers and stumbled from 121 for 2 to 264 for 8 against Abbottabad at the Gohati Cricket Stadium in Swabi. Mohammad Fayyaz and Gauhar Ali stroked their way to a 72-run opening stand before things began to go awry for Peshawar. Fayyaz made 58 with 11 fours and Gauhar contributed 41 before Wajid Ali broke through. Ahmed Jamal and Mohammad Naeem got into the act as well as Peshawar’s batsmen began to throw away starts. Jamal picked up four wickets before an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 95 between Nauman Habib and Riaz Afridi gave Peshawar some late cheer.

Reardon and Hartley save Bulls from disaster

Nathan Reardon and Chris Hartley saved Queensland from embarrassment on the first day against New South Wales in Canberra, where the Bulls stumbled to 4 for 18 after choosing to bat

Nathan Reardon and Chris Hartley saved Queensland from embarrassment on the first day against New South Wales in Canberra, where the Bulls stumbled to 4 for 18 after choosing to bat. At stumps, Queensland had recovered to 7 for 198, with Ben Cutting on 23 and Cameron Gannon on 4, after the loss of Reardon for 71 late in the day.Doug Bollinger picked up two wickets from the first three balls of the match, trapping Wade Townsend lbw for a golden duck and Usman Khawaja lbw for a second-ball duck. Bollinger’s fellow left-armer Josh Lalor then got rid of Joe Burns for 1 from 30 deliveries and Peter Forrest for 17 to leave the Bulls in serious trouble, before Reardon and Hartley staged a recovery.Their 117-run partnership put the match back on a slightly more even keel, although both men had lives early – both dropped by Steven Smith. Reardon was put down on 2 and Hartley on 8 off the bowling of Bollinger, and the misses proved costly for New South Wales.Eventually it was the debutant legspinner Adam Zampa who removed both batsmen, before the captain Steve O’Keefe chipped in with the wicket of Nathan Hauritz.
