Kuggeleijn banks on home advantage

New Zealand Under-19 coach Chris Kuggeleijn hopes home advantage will give them the edge in the Under-19 World Cup beginning on Friday

Cricinfo staff13-Jan-2010New Zealand Under-19 coach Chris Kuggeleijn hopes home advantage will give them the edge in the Under-19 World Cup beginning on Friday. New Zealand had finished third in the previous edition in Malaysia in 2008, but this time their form has been patchy – they lost a home series 1-2 to 2004 and 2006 champions Pakistan, while they lost to Bangladesh and beat England in their warm-up games.”We got a few things right (against England) but we’ve just got to string it together,” Kuggeleijn told . “We’ve got to think how can we turn that around after such a bad performance the day before … but if we play to our potential and get things right, then we’ll go pretty close.”The contracted first-class players in the current New Zealand squad – Corey Anderson, Harry Boam and Doug Bracewell – would be crucial in ensuring success, according to Kuggeleijn. It will also be the second under-19 World Cup for Anderson, Boam, and Michael Bracewell, who were part of the side in 2008.”They’ll be key figures for us with their performances on the field and within the group,” said Kuggeleijn. “A guy like Corey, he’s a fine talent and really clean striker of the ball who can take the game away from an opponent.”Kuggeliejn reckoned Pakistan and India were the two favourites – the two teams have won the three last three editions between them – but said Bangladesh were also a good outside bet. Reflecting on their loss to Bangladesh in the warm-up match Kuggeleijn said, “They look very well prepared, a very organised team. They go hard early with the bat and play with a lot of intent, and we just couldn’t pull them back.”The hosts have been placed in Group C of the tournament alongside Canada, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, and kick off their campaign against Canada at Lincoln 3 on January 16.

Potential Sissoko return relieves pressure on Pochettino

According to the Tottenham Hotspur website, Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko is in contention to play in the League Cup semi-final against Chelsea tomorrow.

Spurs carry a slender 1-0 lead into their second leg at Stamford Bridge, but have had a raft of injuries since their first meeting. Both Harry Kane and Dele Alli have sustained serious injuries, while Son Heung-min is with South Korea at the Asian Games.

Kane’s ankle injury stole the headlines after Tottenham’s loss to Man United at Wembley two weeks ago, but Sissoko also sustained a groin injury in that match as well, as he hobbled off just before half time. The club feared that he would miss up to a month of football, so this is a timely return that will ease a huge amount of pressure on manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentinian would have been struggling to work out how he would shape his team ahead of the trip across London to Chelsea tomorrow. The Frenchman relieves a huge amount of that pressure, particularly due to his versatility.

Sissoko has primarily been deployed as a defensive midfielder so far this season, but with Harry Winks in the team, and Eric Dier potentially making a return, Sissoko could play in a more attacking role, coming straight in for Alli.

Sissoko offers something different to Alli, and his direct dribbling and attitude may actually be an advantage against a Chelsea team that will surely dominate possession. The 29-year-old offers a counter-attacking option further up the field which Spurs lacked in the first leg when they were under pressure. This return could be pivotal to success tomorrow.

Sri Lanka hope for spin threat

Sri Lanka left it late to secure a place in the World Twenty20 semi-finals but now they are in the knockout stage their varied bowling attack could hold the key to success

Andrew McGlashan in St Lucia12-May-2010Sri Lanka left it late to secure a place in the World Twenty20 semi-finals but now they are in the knockout stage their varied bowling attack could hold the key to success. Although without the services of Muttiah Muralitharan they can still throw the ball to Lasith Malinga and Ajantha Mendis, who was left out of the final Super Eight match, and youngster Suraj Randiv.Mendis has a strong chance of returning to face England who have seen little of his variations. The one occasion he has played against them was in the Champions Trophy last year when England thwarted him effectively at the Wanderers during a successful run chase as he went wicketless in nine overs. However, facing Mendis on a spring day in Johannesburg is a very different proposition to facing him on a low, slow surface that has aided spin in St Lucia.Kumar Sangakkara was keeping his cards close to his chest, but it will be hugely tempting to use Mendis against a team that, even taking into account their impressive form, have a poor history against mystery spin.”We’ll have to have a think about that, how that works with our combinations and batting. We would love him to play,” Sangakkara said. “I think he’s a top quality spinner and England’s probably played him once. It’s a realistic possibility but we’ve got other spinners, even part-timers who are pretty good.”But he isn’t the only threat. Malinga, like a few of the big-name Sri Lankan players, hasn’t quite been at his best in this tournament but with the sudden death stages now here he can be the ultimate matchwinner. He was impressive against India where his 2 for 25 played a key role in restricted a late-order charge and Paul Collingwood is certainly on his guard despite the strong form of England’s top order.”A few of us have played against them. But it is obviously a little slight concern,” he said. “Quite a lot of the guys haven’t played against the angle of Malinga, his skiddiness, his change-ups – and not many of us have played much against Mendis.”When guys are bowling 24 balls at you, you can’t give yourself six or seven to get yourself in against them. That’s one of the things we need to make sure we overcome; we need to watch as much footage as possible and talk about it between ourselves. That’s another great thing, that we are communicating really well. Players who have played against them are passing tips on to the other guys, and I think that’s helping a lot.”England haven’t seen anything of 25-year-old Randiv but despite playing just three Twenty20 internationals he is highly regarded by the Sri Lanka hierarchy. He started life as a pace bowler before finding offspin was his vocation and despite not possessing the variety of Muralitharan and Mendis he can still be a handful as he showed against Australia.”The one thing Sri Lanka have got is that they are quite unorthodox in terms of a lot of the bowlers. That is something the batters will have to come up against,” Collingwood said. “But we have a lot of strength in our side now so as much as we will prepare for Sri Lanka and the kind of unorthodox styles that they do have we also have to remember our strengths as well and I think there are plenty of them in our side as well.”Sangakkara, while acknowledging how well England have played over the last week, remained confident that conditions would suit his attack. “We would like to think so, we’ve got a lot of variation in our bowling attack. We will try to exploit that in these conditions but we’ve got to think of all the angles.”We are trying to concentrate a lot on what we do best and how we can get England reacting to us with our bowling, our field-placings and our batting,” he added. “It’s going to be about how we exploit the conditions to our strengths.”Semi-finals of major tournaments can be won with a little bit of magic and Sri Lanka have players who can produce such moments.

Conte green lights Kulusevksi for Spurs

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, there has been a development in Tottenham Hotspur’s chase to sign Juventus forward Dejan Kulusevski ahead of the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Kulusevski chase…

The Lilywhites and manager Antonio Conte have been linked with a swoop for the Sweden international over these past few months amid his lack of starts in Turin.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There have been suggestions of contact from Tottenham as Juve are reportedly willing to offload their attacker next month.

This comes amid Spurs’ search for reinforcements in an effort to bolster Conte’s options as transfer chief Fabio Paratici apparently sets his sights on one of his former signings at Juve.

The Latest: Conte green lights move…

As per La Gazzetta, Tottenham’s managing director Paratici ‘could take’ Kulusevski to north London and he now has Conte’s ‘full esteem’ to make a move in January.

Meanwhile, it is claimed that the Old Lady are open to selling the 21-year-old, but from a starting point of €35 million-€40 million (£29.3m-£33.5m) – unwilling to negotiate any ‘poorly rewarding loans’ or other conditions.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Still young and arguably possessing bags of potential, Kulusevski is a promising attacker and can even operate as an advanced playmaker – gifting Conte an option through the middle as well as on the wing.

His versatility going forward is one incentive for Paratici to move, even despite Juve’s unwillingness to negotiate a temporary deal, and his Serie A numbers for ex-club Parma over 2019/2020 point to a pretty dangerous threat in the final third.

The Swede bagged a brilliant ten goals and eight assists over 33 starts that season whilst also completing an impressive average of 2.2 key passes per 90 (WhoScored).

By comparison to Tottenham’s squad this campaign under Conte, that’s more key passes than any Lilywhites player has managed so far.

Labelled a ‘phenomenon’ by football talent scout Jacek Kulig (Twitter), it is clear that Kulusevski can really devastate going forward when given the opportunity, with the only question being whether Paratici can win the race and give him a chance in the Premier League.

The prolific Norwegian striker added another to his collection after facing Luton Town in FA Cup fifth round action. He found the target on five occasions in that contest, as City swept to a convincing 6-2 win at Kenilworth Road.

Haaland now has 20 hat-tricks in his senior career, and is still just 23 years of age. He has posted trebles for City on a regular basis, with five registered in the Premier League, and makes a point of getting his team-mates to scrawl on every match ball that he collects.

DID YOU KNOW?

Some of those at the Etihad Stadium have poked fun at how many balls Haaland now possesses, with one colleague spotted penning “too many now” on the prize picked up at the end of a destructive display against Luton.

Root swoops as Yorkshire break duck

Yorkshire reached their first T20 Finals Day with a 29-run win over Worcestershire, inspired by Joe Root’s maiden Twenty20 half-century

ScorecardJoe Root hit 65 and then pulled off an excellent piece of fielding as Yorkshire reached their first Finals Day•Getty ImagesYorkshire reached their first T20 Finals Day with a 29-run win over Worcestershire, inspired by Joe Root’s maiden Twenty20 half-century, not to mention an impudent piece of fielding on the deep midwicket boundary that brought a boisterous Headingley crowd to their feet. Root also opened the bowling – admittedly to slightly less spectacular effect – in a display that will have again given the England selectors a tug on the sleeve.Phil Hughes’ unorthodox power and placement helped keep Worcestershire in the game but his unbeaten 80 was not enough, as fellow Australia international Mitchell Starc returned to keep a lid on the final overs, finishing with 3 for 24 from his allocation. In the face-off between the tournament’s leading run-scorer and its leading wicket-taker, Starc was the victor on points. After Hampshire’s dramatic victory over Nottinghamshire later on Wednesday, Yorkshire were drawn against big-hitting Sussex for what promises to be an explosive semi-final encounter between the North and South Group winners on August 25.Worcestershire, who were also aiming to reach Finals Day for the first time, kept pace with the Yorkshire par score but were lacking the blast of nitrous oxide provided by the batting of David Miller and Gary Ballance, who hammered 82 from the last five overs earlier in the day. A similar power-up was not forthcoming from the visitors’ middle order, despite forceful twenties from James Cameron and Gareth Andrew. The former was sent on his way by Root – though his name won’t appear on the scorecards. Having hoisted Rich Pyrah high into the outfield, Cameron may have been expecting to record his second six; but Root, running round from long-on, demonstrated quick-thinking to go with his quick feet, catching the ball, steadying himself in front of the rope and then tossing it back to Miller as his momentum took him out of bounds. The third umpire was consulted, as a matter of course, but both Root and his team-mates knew he had pulled off a piece of fielding that is no less exhilarating now that T20 has made it a more common sight. “The cameras are here aren’t they, so you’ve got to make it look good,” Root said, over his on-pitch mic.Root’s contribution with the bat was even more important, if a little less showy. He is an accomplished strokeplayer in the classical mould, though he repeatedly turned to the reverse sweep in a largely unsuccessful attempt to show he could play the peacock too. Perhaps hitting three of his four first-class sixes in a superb innings of 222 not out at West End earlier this month has convinced him to broaden his batting horizons. His runs were scored all around the wicket, though his first boundary came via an edge between keeper and slip. He could – possibly should – have been dismissed on 40, when a reverse dab against Brett D’Oliveira looped off the top edge to Andrew’s left at short third man but the fielder went at it one-handed and only succeeded in fisting the ball to the boundary. Two overs later, Root drove Aneesh Kapil behind square to reach his fifty, from 36 balls, and he was in full flow against Worcestershire’s England Under-19 allrounder, cutting, driving and pulling three more boundaries off successive deliveries before spooning a slog straight up to be caught and bowled.Root, appropriately, had anchored Yorkshire, as Worcestershire chipped away early on. Yorkshire have twice broken the club record for opening stands in T20 this season but Andrew Gale and Phil Jaques combined to less sparkling effect in the first over of the innings, with the Australian run-out off a wide. Jack Shantry’s delivery swung down the leg side, before deflecting away off the wicketkeeper Ben Scott’s pads, and Jaques was three-quarters of the way down before it became apparent that Gale was not for haring. The Yorkshire captain had missed a month of cricket with a hip injury, so was perhaps just feeling a bit ginger early on. After scoring three singles off his first eight balls, he crashed five fours off his next ten, taking 16 off a Shantry over before chipping Daryl Mitchell’s extremely slow medium-pace back to the bowler. Worcestershire’s captain also accounted for Jonny Bairstow, whose mighty bash wasn’t quite mighty enough to clear long-on and at the halfway stage Yorkshire were 83 for 3, behind the rate on a good pitch.Kapil’s costly over, though it saw off Root, was the trigger for a run rush that saw Yorkshire pile on 104 from the last seven. Miller hit the first six of the innings from the last ball of the 16th over, slog-sweeping Moeen Ali into the stands, and Ballance cracked the next ball, from Shantry, over cover for six more. Miller then smacked sixes over long-on and long-off, before pulling a flat missile through midwicket for four more, progressing to a 23-ball fifty in the following over before miscuing a heave at David Lucas.Shantry finished with 0 for 46 from three overs but Lucas, bowling the final over, was not to be spared either. A single off the first ball brought Ballance on strike, red-faced but cool at the crease, and he cleared the ropes four more times – a bottom-handed club over wide long-on; a flat swipe through midwicket; a stand-and-deliver punch down the ground; and a wristy flick over deep backward square leg – to lift Yorkshire to their highest total in this year’s FLt20 and just one run shy of their best in T20.Root, a slight 21-year-old, is not yet the man for such power-hitting but his all-round abilities meant he was given the new ball as Yorkshire started with an over off offspin. Root went for 10, though both of Moeen’s boundaries – an inside edge past the stumps and a paddle past the diving Moin Ashraf at short fine leg – could have resulted in wickets. Starc then struck in the second over, Vikram Solanki pinned lbw despite the ball looking a touch high, to bring Hughes to the middle. His first boundary was a six down the ground but a succession of partners could not match his efforts. As Root showed, it isn’t over until it’s over the rope – and neither could Worcestershire get over the line.

Austin scripts Jamaica's collapse

A round-up of the first day’s action in the fifth round of matches of the 2009-10 Regional Four-Day Competition

Cricinfo staff13-Feb-2010Leeward Islands made a steady beginning in their fifth-round match against Windward Islands at Bourda, reaching 254 for 5. They were led by Monticin Hodge’s half-century and steady contributions by Kieran Powell and Gavin Williams. Openers Hodge and Mali Richards started slowly, before Richards tried to flick Shane Shillingford down the leg side and gave a catch to the wicketkeeper. He didn’t look too pleased with the umpire’s verdict, though. Powell walked in and batted briskly as Leewards went to lunch at 63 for 1. Powell continued batting aggressively in the afternoon session but fell two short of his fifty when he holed out to long-on. Hodge, who played the supporting role till then, reached his fifty off 165 balls. He and Williams took the score to 161 for 2 at tea. However, Windwards hit back to take two wickets for six runs, including Hodge for 61 and Williams for 44. Steven Liburd and Omari Banks mixed aggression with defence to take the score to 229 before Liburd failed to pick a fuller delivery from Shillingford, trapped lbw offering no shot.A five-wicket haul by offspinner Ryan Austin saw Jamaica collapse under lights against Combined Campuses and Colleges at the Guyana National Stadium. Jamaica were well placed at 151 for 1, but wasted the start provided by Danza Hyatt and Donavan Pagon to collapse to 191 for 9. Pagon and Hyatt made good use of a placid pitch and brought up their half-centuries midway through the post-lunch session. Both hit six fours in getting to their respective milestones. But Austin struck in the final over before tea, trapping Hyatt lbw with a quicker delivery. Pagon fell for 80 when he edged to the keeper down the leg side off left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh. Austin then had Nkrumah Bonner trapped lbw and then had Tamar Lambert caught at short leg. David Bernard was then caught at silly point and Austin picked up his fifth wicket when Bevan Brown holed out to deep midwicket. Kantasingh took 3 for 44 as CCC claimed the final session and the day’s honours.Half-centuries by Ryan Hinds, Jason Haynes and Dale Richards put Barbados in a commanding position at 326 for 5 against Guyana at the Albion Sports Complex. Hinds hit 13 fours and a six in his 76 and shared a stand of 126 for the third wicket with Haynes, who hit 69. Richards dominated an opening stand of 76 with Kraigg Braithwaite and hit eight fours. But he fell to a great catch by Brandon Bess running backwards at long-on. Hinds fell to a soft dismissal when he steered Royston Crandon to gully. Guyana then picked up two more wickets after Hinds’ dismissal. Christopher Barnwell took two wickets while Zaheer Mohammed, Bess and Devendra Bishoo took a wicket each.

Champions League: Ranking the African stars still standing

Which of the continent’s players still featuring in the UCL has the best chance of winning it?

Getty Images7Adel Taarabt

Benfica are the dark horses in the Champions League, but cannot be underestimated after eliminating Ajax in the Round of 16.

One-time wonderkid Taarabt, now reinvented as a central midfielder, remains a glittering talent on his day, and is enjoying a late-career revival at Benfica even if he’s dropped out of the international reckoning.

After his previous stints with Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan and Queen’s Park Rangers, Benfica’s showdown with Liverpool may be the biggest match of his career.

AdvertisementGetty6Samuel Chukwueze

The last Nigerian still standing in the Champions League, Chukwueze won’t be going to the World Cup, but will surely be targeting another European trophy this season after last year’s Europa League triumph.

They have to get past Bayern Munich next, but after eliminating Juventus in the last round, the Yellow Submarine will fear no one as they look to reach the final four.

Chukwueze has had a limited impact in the UCL so far this season—starting just one match—although he could still have a big role to play during the latter stages.

Getty Images5Geoffrey Kondogbia

Atletico Madrid certainly have their work cut out against Manchester City, but could Diego Simeone be the man who inflicts the latest UCL heartbreak on Pep Guardiola?

Certainly, the Spanish giants have the resources to frustrate the Prem leaders, not to mention experience of reaching the Champions League final.

Kondogbia will have a major role to play in the heart of the park, having established himself as a key player at Atleti, while Mozambique’s Reinildo has settled quickly since signing from LOSC Lille in January.

Chelsea will need to improve dramatically this week following Saturday’s humbling at home against Brentford.

The 4-1 loss was one of the low points of Thomas Tuchel’s time in charge of the Blues, where various failings were exposed against their lowly local rivals.

It was a game to forget for Mendy, who was defended by Tuchel after the match, while Ziyech was one of the West Londoners’ better performers during a tricky outing.

The German coach will be expecting from a big response from all of his team when they face Real Madrid on Wednesday.
